Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in the United States and the largest city in Pennsylvania, also known as Philly. In September 1973, the Philadelphia Orchestra, as the "cultural messenger" of the U.S. President Nixon, went to China for a two-week performance (six performances in Beijing and Shanghai), thus becoming the first American orchestra to visit China after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and beginning the "ice-breaking journey" of China-U.S. culture and art.
On February 10, 1980, Chen Weida, director of the Tianjin Municipal Revolutionary Committee, exchanged congratulatory messages from Frank Rizzo, mayor of Philadelphia, and the two cities formally established sister city relations. The archway, the iconic symbol of today's Philadelphia Chinatown, stands as a historical witness.
